Execution of Foreign Judgments

Reliable legal guidance to ensure foreign court decisions are properly recognized and enforced in Greece.

Foreign court judgments involving persons, assets, or legal relationships connected to Greece are not automatically enforceable under Greek law. In order for a foreign judgment to produce legal effect in Greece, it must first be formally recognized or declared enforceable by the competent Greek courts.

This applies to a wide range of matters, including divorce judgments, child custody and visitation orders, child support decisions, debt collection judgments, conservatorship or guardianship rulings, and other civil or family law determinations. For example, a divorce granted abroad will not be recognized in Greece unless and until the foreign judgment is duly recognized, even if the marriage itself was registered in Greece.

Our firm advises and represents clients seeking recognition or enforcement of foreign judgments in Greece, whether to protect existing rights or to pursue enforcement against individuals or entities based in Greece. We manage the entire process, including preparation and filing of the required petition before the competent Greek court, certified translations of all relevant court documents, and representation at the hearing.

Where appropriate, proceedings can be completed without the client’s physical presence in Greece. Upon completion, clients receive a final Greek court judgment reflecting and giving effect to the original foreign decision, allowing it to be relied upon and enforced fully under Greek law.
